With so many new make-up products launching on a daily basis, it’s easy to get carried away by a current lipstick crush, the latest thing in eyeshadow or the new holygrail in concealer – and forgot the bigger picture.
A beauty product can never be considered in isolation: the three-way relationship between fashion, hair and make-up dictates – and completes – every image we see in magazines and every new look we see each season on the catwalks.
Underlining one part of this relationship is Dior’s new ‘Rouge Dior Haute Couleur‘ lipstick collection. Taken at face value, it’s 32 shades to set a woman’s heart racing (definitely a candidate for a serious lipstick crush). Actually, every one of those shades – from the reds and corals to pinks, purples, beiges and browns – is based on iconic dress (below) from the House of Dior since 1947.
The whole collection is a celebration of heritage and Monsieur Dior himself – the man who made red the emblematic colour of the house and who in 1949 created the first ever limited edition Rouge Dior to be sold at 30 Avenue Montaigne, Paris is 1949.
Fast forward to 2010 and Christian’s love of the most vibrant colours has been combined with new product technology. Created by Dior’s current Creative Director of Make-up Tyen, each bullet contains hyarulonic acid microspeheres capable of absorbing 40 times their own weight in moisture. So not only do the shades, (I’ve already fallen for Hypnotic Red, Rare Amber and Mysterious Mauve) create a rich, luxurious colour – but also keep lips looking plump for hours. Suddenly your lips will have the kind of satiny gloss texture of the dresses the collection pays homage to. Now that’s a marriage made in fashion/beauty heaven.
