BodyPower Expo 2015
On a quest to get inspired and rub shoulders with the elite in the fitness industry we headed to BodyPower Expo at Birmingham’s NEC.
Over three days more than 70,000 fitness fans explored the huge venue (the equivalent of ten football pitches) showcasing the latest products and services plus some of the industry’s most recognised athletes, PTs and sports stars.
Guilt-free protein packed treats and snacks appeared to be a booming trend with products like Coco Pro coconut Water, WheyHey no sugar ice-cream, Reflex RBar flapjacks, Muscle Mousse dessert and Novo Nutrition Protein Bites all offering 20g-30g of protein per serving.
Calum Best was looking in the shape of his life, there to promote his Best Life fat burner supplements. In fact, there were familiar faces on most stands, utilising their fan base and taking selfies with the queues of adoring fans.
Athletes and models including Attila Toth, Zac Aynsley, Erko Jun, Ross Dickerson, Max Philisaire, the Harrison Twins and Mr Olympia Phil Heath.
As we’re always on the look-out for new talent we even scouted a potential future star amongst the crowds. A Welsh rugby player that we could certainly see walking for top fashion brands including Calvin Klein Collection and Versace.
The atmosphere was genuinely buzzing and whilst a preconception might be that the venue would be full of guys with attitude, there is something to be said about the camaraderie and support that fellow members of the #FitFam show each other. Whether it was guys trying to deadlift a 160kg buggy (the total was a whopping 75 reps!) to the Men’s Fitness and USN body building competitions there was respect and support from the crowds.
One legend that had everyone clambering for their smart phones was Hulk Hogan. The 61 year-old former wrestler sat down and patiently signed photos for hundreds of fans following an on-stage interview during which he revealed that he’s in talks with Sylvester Stallone to star as a bad guy in Expendables 4 and has a movie with David Hasselhoff in production!
Brand of the day had to be emerging British sportswear brand Gymshark who, due to their ambassador casting, had huge queues of people waiting to get a photo with the likes of Marc Fitt, Christian Guzman, Steve Cook and the Hodge Twins. You also couldn’t go five paces without seeing someone wearing one of their vests or track pants. Not bad for a company set-up by two university students just a few years ago.
BodyPower Expo is gaining popularity each year and 2016 is already set to dwarf this year’s offering. They’ve also just launched a new website (bodypower.tv) and mobile App offering cooking tips, weekly workout videos, nutritional advice and documentaries.
We left BodyPower Expo 2015 feeling motivated with admiration for the guys and girls that work hard and put the time in at the gym to achieve solid results. And whilst having a muscular body isn’t everything, there is a determination and drive that is associated with the fitness world that we can all learn from. Forget #DadBod we’re striving for #GodBod!
