Zara Gorman (above)
Zara Gorman’s debut collection offers a distinctive mix of sculpted headpieces in Perspex, leather and wood – all inspired by the lines and forms of architecture and product design. Gorman explores how texture and tone are achieved by using the colour black. Her influences are wide ranging and span from Japanese architecture and design and the work of perfumer and fashion designer Serge Lutens through to the mechanisms of Venetian blinds and the layout of contour maps.
After winning the Graduate Fashion Week Womenswear Award in 2008, El-Nayal’s eagerly anticipated MA collection took inspiration from the life of a fictional story based around Marlene Dietrich, entitled ‘She Smokes’. Embracing El-Nayal’s love of drama and theatrics, this sinister story features bespoke smoke-print jacquards, Baroque accessories, Swarovski pearls and billowing silhouettes inspired by Queen Elizabeth I. Referencing couture techniques, handstitched cuffs, pleats and folding designs, the line demonstrates exquisite craftsmanship.
Baartmas & Siegel
This dynamic, luxury label creates innovative garments that are currently shaping the landscape of contemporary menswear. After a successful Autumn/Winter 2010, Baartmans and Siegal’s work is fast becoming recognisable by their use of interactive texture and sharp tailoring. Self described as modern traditionalists, they focus on beautiful and seductive fabrics, and shapes that are accessible yet distinctive.
Raised by her parents, who were teachers, and inspired to become a fashion designer by her grandmother, one of Korea’s top models, Shin believes that the two different worlds have given her a unique approach to creativity. Flowers with strong, slim lines are signatures of the collection – complete with graphic silhouettes and combinations of soft and heavy contrasting textures. The collection’s elegant and luxurious pale pink palette is contrasted by strong metallic silver tones that add a unique twist.
