Juergen Teller ‘Woo’ Exhibition

Juergen Teller holds his first major solo exhibition in 10 years at the ICA in London, entitled ‘Woo’ after Will Ferrel’s character in ‘Eastbound & Down’. The exhibition (which we previewed earlier today) showcases over 20 years worth of editorial, advertising and personal archives of photography including the most famous portraits taken of Kate Moss, Lily Cole and Vivienne Westwood.

Juergen himself gave a personal tour of the exhibition. See what he had to say below:

‘Everyone in these photographs I know very well. There’s just not one person who I’ve met and asked if I could take their picture as it needs to be personal. The image with Lily Cole, shot in the Caribbean, was for a W Magazine fashion story. She was nude but very comfortable with herself and with me. I wanted to capture the way she sort of looks painted against the waterfall backdrop.’

‘This picture of Victoria Beckham was for Marc Jacobs and it was very important not to laugh at her with the image but to laugh with her, and I thought of what she is and how she has made herself a product of her own making. So I thought why not just get a big shopping bag and put her in it?’

‘I would just say I’m curious, curious about things. Half the reason why I wanted to photograph my arsehole was because I hadn’t seen it before and I was curious to see what it looks like. It’s interesting to observe things, I just want to explore everything.’

‘I’ve known Vivienne (Westwood) for 20 years. I shot her portrait for French Vogue and she said it was the sexiest picture anyone’s taken of her. So through the years, we kind of met each other and worked together and it was always mesmerizing – seeing what she is, what she stands for and her beliefs. One day I said to her we should do some pictures of you naked and she agreed, so she invited us to Sunday lunch at her house and we just did it. With other people it would take some time to go into that direction but with her she was right there.’

The exhibition hosts another room entirely dedicated to magazine cut out’s of Juergen’s work along with ‘Pictures and Words’ – a book featuring various letters of complaint sent to him and the editors of Die Zeit from when Juergen celebrated free reign with his photographs in the Magazine.

The most recent work to date includes ‘Irene im Wald’ and ‘Keys to the House’ (image below) revealing a more personal side between Juergen’s hometown in Germany and family home in Suffolk.
