Isabeli Fontana Q&A
How do you feel being the MANGO ambassador next season, taking over from Scarlett Johansson?
I feel very honoured to be the new face and spokesperson for MANGO.
What was it like shooting with Terry Richardson?
I always have so much fun shooting with Terry. He is great because he lets me move, he lets me be myself, so I can create the persona of this stylish women who is edgy and very modern. It’s always a pleasure to be around him because he is very funny.
You closed the Mango AW11 show in Paris in May. How was that?
Yes, it was very exciting to close the show. The venue was huge (Georges Pompidou Centre) and the dress I wore is very beautiful, it is a little bit Marilyn Monroe so classic and it also has that touch of sexy. And of course I represent this modern woman, so there needs to be a mix of sexy, cool, Marilyn Monroe but at the same time with a hard look.
What does “fashion” mean to you?
I think Fashion is really important. To me it means being in the season, being modern but still yourself. If you wear fashion clothing you are modern, cool, because you always show your personality in what you wear. So it’s very important to pick the right things.
When you were starting your career as a model, how did you react the first time that they saw your image on billboards around the world?
Actually I had a funny reaction. I was so young – I’ve been working for the industry for 15 years – so I was like….. you know the face that you have when you turn from child to teenager? And actually my family had a stronger reaction than I did. I was like “Yeah, that billboard is kind of cool”. It was not a big deal like “Oh my god, it’s me out there”, totally the opposite. My family said “let’s take a picture, stand in front of the board”. I was 12 years old and I was thinking “whatever”. I felt a little uncomfortable actually, I have always been a tomboy so for me to look up there and see myself was kind of strange, I would say.
What are your tips for looking stylish on a high-street budget?
First of all you don’t need to spend a lot of money, I think it’s just about… like you see a picture and you love that style. It’s very important to check the accessories, the belt, the bag, even the jewellery. You want to look chic, so it’s easy for you to just pick something at Mango because you will find anything you would like because there are many styles. You don’t need to wear very expensive pieces to look chic, you can look expensive with a pair of jeans for 30 Euros. It’s all down to how you put them together.
You have great Brazilian genes, what do you do to keep in shape? Do you have a beauty routine?
I have a beauty secret that I always stick to when I travel all over the world with work do because since I work all over the world and that’s my rose water spray. The water is different from country to country so I always spray my face after showering. So I make sure I spray that and it always works, it’s very good. Also La Roche cream, I am crazy about the French brand.
I try to go to the gym and eat properly which helps a lot.
My background is mixed, my grandmother is Spanish and my parents are Italians. After the war of Italy they left for Brazil to be quiet. It’s funny because if you go to the north of Brazil they are darker, more Latin looking and a mix of Indian and African.
What is always in your handbag?
One thing I have to have is my credit card to go shopping (laughing) because when I see something great, I just have to have it. Also my little necklace because it’s not something you find just anywhere. If you find that little thing that makes a difference you should buy it.
Where do you like to go on holiday? What would you not travel without?
I would never travel without my bikinis, I take at least 10 of them when I go away! I like travelling to beautiful places – vacations for me mean the sea, like the Caribbean. I love the water, the sea.
When you are not working you…
When I am not working I try to spend my time with my family because I am a mother of two children and I try to go to the park. I also go to Fortaleza in the north of Brazil or to Florianopolis, an island at the south, but always by the sea as it makes me feel like myself, very calm. I love nature.
